Academic Excellence

As a Lecturer and Geronsexologist in the Department of Human Development & Family Studies at Iowa State University, Dr. Sample is committed to fostering intellectual growth and critical thinking among students. His major fields of teaching and scholarly emphasis include gerontology and human sexuality science, covering topics such as aging and sexuality, sexuality in the context of nonnormative cognitive change
(e.g., dementia), sexuality ethics and theory, adult development and aging, and biomedical ethics.

Innovative Research

Dr. Sample’s research focuses on the intersection of aging, sexuality, and cognitive health. His research work includes a Ph.D. dissertation titled “Sexuality in the context of non-normative memory change: Exploring theory and the phenomenon.” Within the dissertation, Dr. Sample conducted a scoping review of intersecting aging, sexuality, dementia, and theory literature, construction of a theoretical approach to optimal and ethical sexual expression, and a qualitative study of individuals experiencing mild cognitive impairment or early dementia regarding their current and future considerations of sexual expression and intimacy. Consulting and Executive Leadership

In addition to his academic roles, Dr. Sample has extensive experience in executive leadership and consulting. His roles include serving as the Director of Policy & Outreach and Executive Director for the Iowa Association of Area Agencies on Aging. Additionally, Dr. Sample has presented on topics related to aging services, policy, and leadership at events such as the USAging (formerly National Association of Area Agencies on Aging) annual conferences, LeadingAge annual conference, Ottumwa (Iowa) Leadership Academy annual conference, and several family caregiver conferences. Professional Service and Community Engagement

Beyond the academic realm, Dr. Sample actively engages in public service, serving on advisory boards and committees related to dementia awareness, injury prevention, and healthcare ethics. His commitment to community well-being is further evidenced by his role as a Dementia Friends Iowa Co-Chair and his involvement in various state-level task forces and committees. Dr. Sample has also traveled to Tanzania to participate in a medical mission related to the end-of-life, where he also conducted research for his masters degree in biomedical ethics and health policy.
